What's On

Located in the stunning Adelaide Hills, the National Motor Museum grounds play regular host to some of the finest social motoring events in Australia, including the Bay to Birdwood Finish Event and the Rock & Roll Rendezvous. The extensive grounds also attract motoring clubs from the wider community that regularly hold days and celebrations at the Museum, for example the annual Minis at the Mill and Small Ford Sunday.

Bush Mechanics: the exhibition

Exhibition

Daily from 12 April 2017 to 6 July 2017 (then touring nationally)

Bush Mechanics: the exhibition is based on the incredibly popular ABC TV series of the same name. It shows the adoption of the motorcar as an integral part of Aboriginal life in Central Australia. More than just a showcase of bush ingenuity, the show was a documentary-style series with strong elements of comedy, music and magical realism.

The exhibition will show the ingenuity of the bush mechanics in the context of Warlpiri storytelling, music and art and wider issues (motoring and non-motoring) affecting Aboriginal Australians.

1920s Garage

Permanent exhibition

Come and see what the interior of a typical mechanical workshop looked like in the 1920s. Museum volunteers have created a replica 1920s Garage using tin signs, petrol pumps, original tools, advertising images, a fire extinguisher, and even a vintage typewriter and small office. The main feature is a rolling Ford Model T chassis, designed to show the various components of a chassis and running gear and how they fit together.
